Do you remember when you first saw Puppet Master? I do. It was 1989 and I was anxiously awaiting it's release on VHS at the local video tape rental store. What's that you ask? Well kiddies, way back 35 years ago, before the internet, before cell phones, and before streaming services, you had to go to a store and browse physical copies of videos on big clunky casset tapes. It was like going to the library to check out movies to watch at home. Slogans like "be kind, rewind" and "two day rental" ruled the day.Â
But with your trusty rental card in hand, a few bucks in your wallet, and some luck, you could find hidden gems in the horror section that would make the night epic. Puppet Master was one of those gems. Amidst a sea of schlock, the brash movie about killer puppets was one of the most saught after rentals in the store. And I was there for the day it dropped waiting in line to watch it.

The puppets are the real stars of the show. From their first appearance on film in 1989, horror fans have loved these little killers. They are quiet but deadly. Miniature but mighty. These little monsters revel in the kill and they have had some of the most memorable exploits of any puppet outside of maybe Pinnochio. Probably the second most famous hook handed villain of all time - Blade is the leader of the puppets. He's a slasher with a knife and a hook for hands and bulleted eyes that stare into your soul.  What he lacks in noggin size he makes up for in muscle. Pin Head is the strong man of the group and the puppet that has taken the most damage over the many sequels. Six arms, six guns, all sinister! Six Shooter is creepy cowboy who gets the dirty work done. The Jester is one of the original gang who changes his expression based on spinning sections of his head. He's the lookout for the rest of the puppets and is sneaky in his own way. Tunneler is a deadly puppet with probably the most gruesome kill of the first movie. His spinning drill head makes for a terrifying weapon to his unsuspecting victims. Leech Woman is maybe the creepiest of the puppets. With her propensity to regurgitate a seemingly endless supply of leeches she gives new meaning to the term "bloodsucker." Torch is the hitman of the group and one of the most deadly. With a flamethrower arm and a propensity to show no mercy, he's earned his place as one of the most feared puppets. Decapitron is one of the newer puppets in the brood but clearly one of the most dangerous. His replaceable head and ability to project Toulon's image.
